David Hillary has an amazing story. He was an Army Ranger and a sniper in Iraq, but after being wounded by a roadside bomb, losing friends and undergoing many subsequent surgeries, his life descended into alcohol and pain-killer addiction. Through his rehab process, he rediscovered his love for golf, a sport he had pursued in high school, and is now a student at the Golf Academy of America in Farmers Branch, Texas, learning the business side of the game in hopes of making a career out of it. It was an honor to photograph him for
The Brandon Agency, and I was very thankful for the beam of light pouring in the window at just the right place and right time that allowed me to make this portrait.
