Dr. Ben Carson at WDCS
Dr. Ben Carson was raised in inner-city poverty by a single mother. His childhood was marked by dismal grades and an explosive temper. When Carson was in middle school, his mother forced her sons to exchange the TV for books, and Carson's grades immediately began to improve. But his temper was still a problem. After attempting to stab a friend over a small argument, Carson cried out to God and the Lord saved Carson and took away his anger. He headed to Yale and later University of Michigan medical school. He would go on to become the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a position he holds to this day. He gained worldwide renown when he became the first doctor to separate conjoined twins connected at the head. Today, Carson takes on many speaking engagements around the country while still maintaining a heavy surgery schedule. In early October, he spoke at West Dallas Community School, a school very near to Kelly's and my heart. It was an honor to photograph him and a privilege to spend the day listening to his thoughts on education, faith, and the state of our country.
